Melissa Sammalvaara

Sammalvaara is an adventurous artist working in Helsinki and at various campfires. He creates modern rugs inspired by nature and mosses, which examine spatiality and the relationship between modern humans and nature using different surfaces, materials and techniques. The handmade rugs are richly textured and vary in shape: they grow on walls in organic clusters and spread with their mycelium gently but purposefully. The rugs are made by hand by weaving, tufting, knitting and knotting, and as with traditional rugs, the process is very slow and careful.
