Mirja Niemelä

Mirja Niemelä is a ceramicist, doctor of arts and teacher from Hämeenlinna. The themes of Niemelä's work can be found in nature, and with expression she works on the small details of nature to make them visible. Over the past two years she has been working on the theme of lichen. Niemelä's roots can be found in the landscapes of Southern Lapland, the nightless night, the lands of pine trees, reindeer and lichen. The landscape and details of her childhood still speak to her. At the same time, her work is material-based, meaning that the materials and glazes of the surfaces of the works are carefully tested. The works are based on glaze and surface experiments that explore the atmosphere, texture, colour and gloss of the glaze in the works.
